The band
was started by Harry Eggleston, Earl Vosburgh, Charlie Turner,
and Frank Vaill. The band initially practiced upstairs at the
Lakeville Hose Company House. It was then a wooden building that stood
on the same site as the current Lakeville Hose Company Fire House.
The band soon moved its home practice location to the Academy Building
in Salisbury next to the post office. It is a two story brick building
and was originally the Lakeville school house. The name of the band subsequently
changed in the early 80’s to the Salisbury Band.
This picture was taken on the steps of the Salisbury
Library in 1930. This is believed to be the first photo of the band after
they got their first uniforms. The band was founded in 1928 and had to
raise money for uniforms and music and one of the things they did to accomplish
this was to play at intermission at a local theater called the Best Theater
owned by the Stuart’s at the time. The Best Theater was located in Lakeville
across the street from the railroad station where Brothers’ Pizza now
is located. A traveling theater man had put together a show called ‘The
Musical Comedy’ using all local people
